About the atelier
Atelier Classic has been making ballet stage costumes since 2009. Every tutu is handmade, from the measurements to the final stitch.
The atelier began with a single tutu sewn for the founder's daughter: nothing in the shops held its shape on stage.
Today four seamstresses work in the workshop, and costumes cut from our patterns dance at competitions in Ukraine, Poland, Germany and Italy. We sew both for private clients and for schools and studios.
The anatomy of a tutu
- 1
Measurements and pattern
We draft an individual bodice pattern from twelve measurements. We never use stock patterns.
- 2
Bodice
Assembled over boning with a double cotton lining, so the costume does not chafe during rehearsals.
- 3
Plate
Twelve layers of tulle of different stiffness, gathered and stitched round by hand.
- 4
Shaping
The tutu rests on a dress form for several days so the tulle takes and keeps its shape.
- 5
Decoration
Beads, sequins and appliqué, following the drawing agreed with you.
- 6
Fitting
A final fitting and adjustment: straps, hooks and the length of the plate.
